In Belarus, the crackdown on opposition politicians, civil society groups, human rights defenders and media continues. While no less than seven hundred demonstrators were arrested in the evening after the elections of 19 December, several of them have now been brought to court, have faced unsubstantiated charges and received extreme sentences.

May 4, 2011, Minsk, Belarus. Human rights defenders from different OSCE countries were again detained in Minsk, in the office of “Viasna” Human Rights Center ahead of a press-conference where the Interim Report on events of 19th December, 2010 in Minsk, produced by the Special Rapporteur of Committee of International Control, was to be presented. Two representatives of the International Observation Mission were told to leave the country in 24 hours and are banned from entering Belarus for two years.

On 20th of April Marina Tsapok – human rights activist from Ukraine was detained while crossing the border.
She was going to Minsk to be the information assistant in the International observation mission in Minsk.Shewas taken off the train from Kyiv at the Belarusian frontier post “Teryukha”. Marina as well as other foreign human rights defenders Andrey Yurov and Maxim Kitsyuk found out to be includedinto the "black list" of foreign nationals  prohibited toenter the Republic of Belarus.

On April 19, human rights activist Pavel Levinov, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC) member, Oleg Borshchevsky, independent journalist, Olga Karach, “Our Home” organization leader, and Valeriy Shchukin, journalist and human rights activist, were detained in Minsk. Cases of detainees will be treated tomorrow at 10.00 in the Frunzensky district court of Minsk.

The city courtof Orsha settledthe case of “disorderly conduct” in which Alexander Lashmankin was accused – a Russian journalist, editor of the news agency “Freedom”, which received official accreditation from the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. The judge Ina Kokhav found the arguments of the charges convincing enough and sentenced him to three days of administrative arrest. The jailed journalist went onhunger strike.

Today, on March 17th, at 11 a.m. Andrey Yurov, a famous human rights defender, Head of the International Observation Mission of the Committee on International Control over the Situation with Human Rights in Belarus was released from custody in the Soviet district police department of Minsk. He spent the whole night there after his detention in a flat in Minsk where Andrey often stays.
